Sue is an independent consultant. Smyllie’s People undertakes work aimed at improving community well being using a participatory action research style which develops individual and collective efficacy.
Sue holds a degree in science majoring in biochemistry and a Masters in Health Science with a major in health promotion.
Sue has a particular interest in well being which developed from an earlier interest in ‘health’. Her practice has included 25 years experience in project management, research and the design and support of learning opportunities. Sue has managed a large variety of community based, health related projects particularly in rural and remote areas, worked in government and non-government organisations both in Australia and in PNG and in academic and research institutions including QIMR, UQ, QUT and ANU.
Sue has served on the management committee of Self Help Queensland (SHQ) Inc for 12 years and has been President of that organisation for the last8 years. SHQ is a community organisation which undertakes work aimed at building the capacity of the self help sector in Queensland.

Self Help Queensland (SHQ) is a community organization committed to increasing the capacity of the self help sector in Queensland. SHQ works within a value set of social justice, compassion, trust, grace, dignity and respect and applies the principles of doing no harm, social responsibility, transparency, collaboration, listening, learning, participation, confidentiality and continuous improvement to all that we do.
SHQ provides group development support, referral to and information about self help groups for individuals, health and community professionals, skill and knowledge development activities and infrastructure including meeting space, computer and internet access, photocopying and skilled personnel to support sector development.
SHQ was founded in 1983 and has been partially funded by Queensland Health since 1994. SHQ membership currently exceeds 2000. Members reside in the SEQ region, Bundaberg, Gladstone, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Barcaldine, Longreach, Townsville, Cairns and Mt Isa are also represented.
